Pattonville teacher speaks at National Challenger Convention
Laura Hartsock, a science teacher at Pattonville Heights Middle School, was invited to speak at the recent National Challenger Convention in St. Louis about the impact the Challenger Learning Center program has on students.
Hartsock was invited to speak because she earned a National Teacher of the Year Award from the Challenger Center for Space Education in 2005. The center is a non-profit organization created by the families of the astronauts who were tragically lost during the last flight of the Challenger space shuttle.
The honor allows Challenger Center's international network of Challenger Learning Centers to recognize teachers who exemplify the spirit of the Challenger crew's education mission and who share a commitment to learning about science, mathematics and technology.

Pattonville graduate to be featured on Food Network
1990 Pattonville High School graduate Debbie (Steudeman) Stieferman will be featured on the Food Network in the near future. Stieferman owns Gooey Louie, a St. Louis bakery that makes homemade gooey butter cakes with a variety of toppings and flavors (including the original). Her company will be featured on the Food Network with a coffeehouse in Lafayette Square as they compete to determine who makes the best gooey butter cake in St. Louis. Filming takes place in September. Stieferman and her husband opened their gooey butter cake bakery in 2006 on Chippewa in St. Louis and recently opened a second location in Ballwin. Fellow 1990 PHS graduate Jenny (Garofalo) Tindall assists with the operations at Gooey Louie, and 2006 graduate Katie Meier was recently hired to help bake cakes.

Pattonville seeks senior adult volunteers for tutoring program
The Pattonville School District is looking for older adults to volunteer their time with the district's intergenerational tutoring program. After training, volunteers are matched with kindergarten, first- and second-graders at Pattonville's elementary schools. Each volunteer spends about 40 minutes once a week working one-on-one with a child on reading and language skills.
The only requirements are time, enjoyment of helping children and a free, two-day training session. Pattonville provides new tutors with all of the necessary materials as well as the training session and monthly meetings to ensure continual support and assistance. This tutoring program was developed by OASIS and is financed by corporate donations.
This year's training will take place from 9 a.m to 3 p.m. on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1. For more information or to sign up to participate, call Kelly Kendall in the Pattonville Community Relations Office at (314) 213-8025.
